Environmental Justice is a motivation to the residents of Mountain View, New Mexico. Mountain View is located in the South Valley of Albuquerque and has the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge. There is a vacant four-acre site across the railroad tracks that belongs to the Refuge that has potential for development. The development ideas plan on serving the wildlife and public. Our Community and Regional Planning undergraduate studio class at The University of New Mexico worked in collaboration with the Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge throughout the planning process. Our development plans were supposed to connect the four-acre lot to the refuge where it will gain attention and public use. Gaining input from the Mountain View community and the Valle de Oro Refuge staff, we were able to create plans that can create that connection even with the distance in between. This project site is important to the Mountain View community and an opportunity to practice placemaking.
